Weymouth Water Quality

We are on a mission to improve Weymouth’s water quality, in response to Weymouth Central beach having its Blue Flag status removed at the end of the Summer 2024 season. To do this, we are working with visitors, local residents and boat owners to encourage responsible stewardship of Weymouth’s waters.

Love Weymouth Harbour

We are encouraging all boat users in Weymouth Harbour to:

Don’t throw anything overboard

Keep a bag of rubbish and recycling on your boat, then use the waste facilities on shore. There are multiple rubbish and recycling facilities around the harbour. Find a map of Weymouth Harbour here.

Use onshore toilets

There are toilets and shower facilities at the harbour office and at several other locations around the harbour. Find where your nearest loos are on our map of Weymouth Harbour here.

Fit a holding tank or chemical toilet

…so you can hold onto your black water until you can use a pump out facility. Discharging untreated sewage into the harbour is harmful to the environment and has an impact on all water users. We will soon have our own pumping station installed at Weymouth harbour, so get you boat prepared in advance!

Only Rain Down the Drain

You may have seen our new mural on Weymouth Promenade, which is an eye-catching design to remind visitors to the beach that litter dropped on the pavement or down the drain will inevitably end up on the beach and in the sea. This, paired with ‘The beach starts here’ messaging along the gutters will act as gentle nudge reminders for people to use the litter bins available.

Don’t Feed the Locals

We have been re-enforcing our ‘Don’t Feed the Locals’ campaign to discourage people from feeding the seagulls. Gull faeces increases the amount of harmful bacteria in seawater, which is made worse when the bird population is higher than it would be based on natural resources alone.  Would you like a window sticker for your business?  Email Litter Free Dorset to let us know.

What Not to Flush

A big thank you to all the businesses along Weymouth harbour side and Weymouth Esplanade who have agreed to display our What Not to Flush posters in their loos:

Has your business displayed a poster? Or would you like to be sent a poster for your business? Email Litter Free Dorset to let us know.
